Couples Therapy

1

What is couples therapy?

Couples therapy is a type of psychotherapy that helps partners address relationship challenges, improve communication, and strengthen emotional connections. It is guided by a licensed therapist who assists couples in resolving conflicts, building trust, and fostering mutual understanding.

2

How do I know if we need couples therapy?

If you're experiencing frequent arguments, communication breakdowns, loss of intimacy, trust issues, or feeling disconnected from your partner, couples therapy can help. It’s also beneficial for couples looking to improve their relationship, even if they aren’t currently facing major issues.

3

What happens during a session?

During a session, both partners will work with the therapist to discuss concerns, explore underlying issues, and develop healthier communication habits. The therapist may use various techniques such as active listening, role-playing, and guided discussions to help improve understanding and resolution.

4

How long does couples therapy take?

The duration of couples therapy varies depending on the issues being addressed. Typically, therapy may last anywhere from a few weeks to several months. Some couples may need ongoing sessions, while others may resolve their concerns in a shorter time.

5

Is couples therapy only for couples in crisis?

No, couples therapy can benefit relationships at any stage. It’s not just for couples in crisis—many people seek therapy to strengthen their relationship, improve communication, or resolve minor conflicts before they become major issues.

6

Will therapy save our relationship?

Couples therapy provides tools and support to improve communication, resolve conflicts, and enhance understanding. While it can significantly improve a relationship, the commitment of both partners is essential. Success in therapy often depends on both individuals' willingness to work together and make changes.

7

Do we need to be married to attend couples therapy?

No, couples therapy is for any two individuals in a romantic relationship, whether married, dating, or living together. It's beneficial for any couple seeking to improve their relationship.

8

How confidential is couples therapy?

Therapists adhere to strict confidentiality guidelines to ensure a safe, private space for both individuals to speak openly. However, in cases of imminent harm or safety concerns, the therapist may be required to break confidentiality in order to protect individuals.

9

How do we find the right therapist for us?

It’s important to choose a licensed therapist who specializes in couples therapy. Look for someone who makes both partners feel heard, respected, and supported. Many therapists offer initial consultations to help you determine if they’re a good fit for your needs.

10

Can we still go to therapy if one partner doesn’t want to?

While it’s ideal for both partners to attend therapy, individuals can still benefit from therapy on their own. Individual therapy can help you explore personal feelings, improve communication, and develop strategies for strengthening your relationship.
